Shiogama sailing guide. Shiogama is the natural maritime heart of Miyagi Prefecture and one of the most yacht‑friendly ports in all of Tohoku. Sitting at the entrance to Matsushima Bay, one of Japan’s most celebrated coastal landscapes. Shiogama combines deep shelter, excellent facilities, and a calm, well‑organised small‑craft harbour that makes it a favourite among long‑range cruisers. For yachts arriving from Fukushima or preparing to enter the Iwate rias, Shiogama offers a welcome blend of practicality, scenery, and easy access to services that are rare along this coastline.
Beyond its operational value, Shiogama has a warm, lived‑in maritime character shaped by centuries of fishing, salt production, and coastal trade. The town is compact, friendly, and deeply connected to the sea, with a working waterfront that coexists comfortably with visiting yachts. Provisioning is straightforward, transport links are excellent, and the harbour’s protected basins provide a calm, predictable environment in all seasons. For crews seeking a reliable base before heading north into more remote waters, Shiogama is one of the most dependable ports in Tohoku.
Shiogama is one of the easiest ports to enter along the Tohoku coast. Wide, well‑marked approach channels, deep water and predictable depths, minimal swell inside Sendai Bay, light to moderate fishing traffic. Night entry feasible due to strong lighting and clear markers. Fog is possible in spring, but manageable with radar and AIS. The harbour layout is logical, with dedicated small‑craft basins separate from commercial areas.
Shiogama offers some of the best small‑craft facilities in northern Japan. Protected marina‑style berths with calm water year‑round. Additional berthing options in adjacent small‑craft basins. Fishing harbour berths possible with permission. No anchoring inside the harbour; space is limited. Outstanding shelter from swell and wind. This is one of the most comfortable and predictable berths in Tohoku.
Shiogama is a reliable all‑season port.

Over 140 seafood stalls selling fresh fish, processed products, and dried seafood. One of the largest tuna (maguro) landing ports in Japan, with over 20 tuna‑specialist stalls. Visitors can build their own kaisendon by buying seafood and adding a rice set. The market is open to the public despite being a wholesale facility. Shiogama Fish Wholesale Market. About 120 specialty stores in a 4,950 m² market selling fresh fish and processed products. Originally for professional cooks, but open to the public at market prices. Local Fish Shops (Shiogama City) and has small fishmongers selling same‑day catch in retail quantities.
Shiogama does not provide marina‑style fuel or water services for yachts. Shiogama is a commercial fishing port and sightseeing‑boat terminal, not a yacht marina, and there are no dedicated fuel docks, no water pedestals, and no yacht‑service berths available. All visiting yachts must plan to refuel and water elsewhere in Miyagi Prefecture, typically in Sendai Port or Ishinomaki. Shiogama provides no potable water points for visiting yachts. There are no marina pedestals, no yacht berths, and no shore‑service infrastructure. The waterfront is dominated by fishing industry facilities and tour‑boat operations, not yacht services.
