Sailing yacht whisker poles. A
whisker pole holds the clew of a poled-out headsail away from the mast when
sailing downwind. It stabilises the sail when apparent wind moves across the
stern and prevents repeated collapse and refill. Although it normally carries
less load than a symmetrical spinnaker pole, it remains a compression member
and can buckle when extended too far, loaded at an angle or trapped during a
roll or accidental gybe.
The skipper must treat the
whisker pole, mast attachment, end fittings, extension mechanism and control
lines as one operating system. Telescopic poles require additional inspection
because the overlap between tube sections determines their structural capacity.
A pole that locks at full extension can still be unsafe if the overlap is below
the manufacturer’s minimum or if internal corrosion and dirt prevent the
sections sharing load.

The whisker pole supports the
headsail clew on the windward side when sailing with the sail opposite the
mainsail or when reaching with the headsail projected away from the yacht. The pole reduces sail collapse but does not
eliminate the need to steer and trim for sea conditions. The pole carries
compression between the mast and clew. Rolling, sail refill and changes in
sheet tension can produce cyclic load. Do not use the pole as a fixed brace
against uncontrolled sail movement.

Versus Spinnaker Pole
A whisker pole and spinnaker
pole may appear similar but are designed for different load cases.
A spinnaker pole carries the
guy load of a symmetrical spinnaker and is normally designed for higher
compression.
A whisker pole supports a
poled-out headsail and is often telescopic to suit different sail sizes.
Do not use a whisker pole as a
spinnaker pole unless the manufacturer approves that duty.
Do not assume a heavy
spinnaker pole will operate safely as a telescopic headsail pole if its length
and fittings do not suit the sail.

The pole length must suit the
yacht and headsail. A pole that is too
short does not project the clew far enough and may allow the sail to collapse. A
pole that is too long can press the clew forward, distort the sail and apply
side load to the mast fitting. Telescopic poles must retain the manufacturer’s
minimum overlap between sections. Do not extend the pole beyond the marked
limit.

structural capacity normally
reduces as the pole is extended because less tube remains overlapped. Inspect the following:
- Tube Overlap Markings. Maximum-extension marks must remain visible and
legible. The pole must not be operated beyond them.
- Inner-tube Condition. Scratches, dents and corrosion can prevent
smooth movement and reduce strength.
- Outer-tube Condition. Cracks around the locking mechanism can develop
under repeated load.
- Straightness. Both sections must remain straight. A bent inner tube can jam or
load the outer tube unevenly.
- Internal Cleanliness. Salt, sand and corrosion products can jam the
mechanism or score the tubes.
Do not force a seized
telescopic pole by twisting it with deck winches or tackles.

A twist-lock pole uses
rotation between the inner and outer sections to lock the extension. The
mechanism depends on friction or an internal expanding fitting. Inspect the
following
- Positive Locking. The tube must remain at the selected length when
axial load is applied.
- Smooth Release. The lock must release without excessive force when unloaded.
- Slipping. Movement under compression indicates contamination, wear or
incomplete engagement.
- Internal Corrosion. Salt deposits can prevent the lock expanding
evenly.
- Overtightening Damage. Excessive twisting can damage the internal
mechanism or deform the tube.
Do not attempt to adjust a
twist-lock pole while it remains heavily compressed between mast and sail.

Some telescopic poles use
spring buttons, pins or indexed holes. Inspect the following
- Full pin engagement. The pin must pass completely through the
intended hole rather than resting on its edge.
- Spring return. A button must rise fully when aligned with the hole.
- Hole wear. An elongated hole allows movement and can permit accidental
release.
- Pin bending. A bent pin indicates side load or incomplete engagement.
- Corrosion. Salt can prevent the spring or pin moving freely.
Do not use a screwdriver, bolt
or improvised pin unless it matches the designed diameter and bearing
arrangement.

Some poles use internal lines
or tackles to extend and retract. Inspect the following:
- Internal line condition.
- Cleats and locking devices.
- Sheave rotation.
- Exit-edge wear.
- Attachment points inside the tube.
A slipping control line can
allow sudden pole shortening and loss of sail control.
Do not apply winch load to an
extension line unless the pole is designed for it.

The inboard end connects to a
mast ring or track car. Inspect the following:
- Jaw Closure. The fitting must lock fully around the ring or pin.
- Trigger Operation. The release must work freely and return to the
locked position.
- Wear at the Socket. Grooves or flattened surfaces show repeated
movement.
- Jaw Spreading. Bent jaws can release under compression.
- Tube Attachment. Rivets, screws or bonding must remain secure.
- Articulation. The fitting must align with the pole without forcing the tube
sideways.
Do not connect the pole to a
mast ring that is too large for the fitting jaws.

The outboard end connects to
the headsail sheet or clew fitting. Depending on the system, the pole may
attach around the sheet rather than directly to the sail. Inspect the
following:
- Jaw and trigger condition. The fitting must close positively and release
deliberately.
- Rope contact surface. Sharp edges can cut or flatten the sheet.
- Clew compatibility. The fitting must not side-load or damage the
sail clew ring.
- Swivel operation. A rotating end must move freely.
- Attachment to the tube. Any looseness requires removal from service.
Do not trap both sheet and
sail hardware in a fitting not designed to hold them together.

A fixed mast ring must remain
securely attached and aligned with the expected pole load. Inspect the
following:
- Fasteners for corrosion and movement.
- The ring for wear grooves and cracking.
- The mast surface for corrosion beneath the
fitting.
- Ring alignment with the pole.
A track-mounted car
must move and lock correctly. Do not attach a whisker pole to a mast fitting
intended only for light storage or handling loads

The pole height must allow the
pole to lead from the mast to the headsail clew without forcing the clew upward
or downward.
- A pole set too high lifts the
clew and can open the sail foot excessively.
- A pole set too low drags the
clew downward and can increase bending load.
- The pole must remain clear of
guardrails, stanchions and the forestay.
- Adjust height with the sail
depowered where possible.

Many whisker poles are clipped
over the working sheet rather than directly onto the clew.
- This allows the pole to slide
toward the clew as the sheet is trimmed.
- The sheet must fit the jaw
without being crushed.
- Inspect the sheet after use
for flattening, pulled cover fibres and local glazing.
- Do not clip the pole over a
knot or splice that cannot pass through or sit correctly in the end fitting.

An uphaul supports pole weight
and controls vertical movement.
- It is recommended where the
pole is heavy, used in a seaway or difficult for the crew to control.
- Inspect the line, sheave, pole
attachment and clutch.
- The uphaul must not lift the
pole hard against the headsail sheet.

telescopic pole requires no control line in heavy rolling conditions.

A downhaul controls upward and
aft movement.
- It can stabilise the pole
during rolling and reduce load on the crew.
- Inspect the deck attachment,
block, line and pole connection.
- The downhaul must lead so it
does not bend the pole around a central attachment point.
- Do not over-tension the
downhaul against the uphaul and sheet.

A retaining line can prevent
the pole from moving aft or striking the shrouds.
- The line must attach to a
suitable point and remain adjustable.
- Do not use an uncontrolled
short line that locks the pole into a position where it cannot follow sail
movement.
- All control lines need a
release method accessible from a safe working position.

Prepare the pole before the
yacht is fully loaded downwind. A
controlled setup sequence is as follows:
- Adjust the pole to the approximate required
length while it is unloaded.
- Attach the uphaul and downhaul where fitted.
- Connect the inboard end to the mast fitting.
- Connect the outboard end to the sheet or clew
arrangement.
- Ease the headsail sheet and move the pole outward
under control.
- Adjust pole height and length until the sail
remains stable without forcing the pole against the rig.

pole and the mast or shrouds.

- A poled-out headsail can
refill violently after collapsing in a roll.
- This shock loads the sheet,
pole, mast ring and sail clew.
- Reduce headsail area when
rolling causes repeated collapse and refill.

prevent all sail movement in unsuitable sea conditions.

- When the mainsail and headsail
are set on opposite sides, an accidental gybe remains a primary risk.
- Use a controlled mainsail
preventer where appropriate.
- Maintain a course that keeps
the apparent wind from crossing the stern.
- The whisker pole must not be
allowed to strike the forestay or shrouds if the headsail backs.
- Do not continue wing-and-wing
when steering control or sea state makes repeated gybes likely.

Some systems allow limited
furling with the pole attached to the sheet, while others require the pole to
be removed first.
- Follow the sail and pole
manufacturer’s operating method.
- Furling changes the clew
position and can increase pole compression or alter the lead.
- Do not continue furling when
the pole begins to force the clew forward or bind against the rig.

- Depower the headsail before
moving the pole.
- Control the outboard end with
the sheet and any uphaul or downhaul.
- Release one end only when the
crew has control of the pole weight and movement.
- Do not allow a telescopic pole

A loaded whisker pole must not
press against a shroud or forestay. Contact produces a concentrated bending
point in the pole and can abrade the standing rigging. After contact, inspect for
the following defects:
- The tube for dents or scratches.
- The standing-rigging wire for abrasion or broken
strands.
- The end fittings for distortion.
- The mast ring for movement.

visibly bent pole.

Inspect the entire tube before
use. Look for the following defects:
- Dents. A dent reduces resistance to buckling.
- Permanent bends. A curve that remains unloaded indicates
structural deformation.
- Cracks around locking holes. Repeated pin loading can crack the tube.
- Corrosion. White powder or paint lifting indicates aluminium loss.
- Deep scoring. Scratches in telescoping surfaces can initiate cracking or prevent
smooth movement.
- Crushing from brackets. Storage clamps must not deform the tube.
A damaged telescopic section
can fail when extended even if it remains usable when shortened.

- Corrosion commonly develops
around stainless end fittings, locking pins and rivets.
- Remove fittings where
corrosion products appear.
- Clean and inspect the
underlying aluminium.
- Use suitable isolation
materials during reassembly.
- Do not drive stainless
fasteners into corroded aluminium and assume tightening has restored the joint.

- Carbon poles require
inspection after impact or crushing.
- Look for cracked coating,
fibre exposure, soft areas and local changes in sound during tap testing.
- Do not clamp carbon tubes
tightly in deck storage brackets.
- Any significant impact
requires specialist assessment.

- Store the pole where it cannot
be stepped on, crushed or filled with water.
- Deck brackets must support the
tube over a suitable area and permit drainage.
- Secure both ends so the pole
cannot move in a seaway.
- Release or relax locking
mechanisms where recommended by the manufacturer.
- Do not store a wet telescopic
pole closed for extended periods without rinsing and drying it.

- Extend the pole and rinse all
tube surfaces with fresh water.
- Flush salt from triggers,
buttons and locking mechanisms.
- Allow the pole to dry before
storage.
- Use only compatible
lubricants. Some twist-lock systems rely on friction and can slip if lubricated
incorrectly.
- Operate every trigger and lock
before an offshore passage.

Remove the whisker pole from
service when:
- A tube contains a permanent bend, dent or crease
that affects its shape.
- The telescopic lock slips under normal
compression.
- A button or pin does not engage fully.
- Locking holes are elongated or cracked.
- An end fitting fails to close or release
correctly.
- Rivets, screws or bonded joints move relative to
the tube.
- Corrosion has removed metal near a fitting or
lock.
- A carbon tube shows delamination or fibre damage.
- The pole can no longer retain the manufacturer’s
minimum tube overlap.
Do not use a damaged pole at
reduced extension unless the remaining configuration has been approved.
