Family Islands Sailing Guide

Family Islands sailing guide. The Family Islands group lies off Mission Beach on the Cassowary Coast and forms a compact chain of steep, reef‑fringed islands with limited but functional anchorages. The group is a routine staging point for vessels transiting between Hinchinbrook Channel and Cairns, offering short‑stay anchorages in settled conditions.

Most islands have fringing reef, restricted swinging room, and exposure to trade‑wind swell wrap. Anchorages are generally located on the western sides where sand patches provide workable holding. No marina, fuel, water, or technical services exist on any island in the group.

Family Islands Sailing Guide – The Islands

  • Dunk Island is the largest island in the group and the primary anchorage node, with a workable western anchorage in 6–12 m over sand. It serves as the central reference point for routing through the group and is the only island with a practical landing area and walking tracks.
  • Bedarra Island lies southwest of Dunk and provides a small, weather‑dependent anchorage on its western side in 8–15 m over sand and coral rubble. Swinging room is limited, and the anchorage is suitable only in stable conditions.
  • Wheeler Island sits south of Bedarra and offers a narrow western anchorage in 8–12 m with restricted room and variable holding. It is used primarily as a short‑stop anchorage when conditions are settled.
  • Coombe Island lies south of Wheeler and provides a small western anchorage in 10–14 m over sand patches. Exposure to northerly winds limits its use, and it is generally a daytime or fair‑weather stop.
  • Smith Island, Bowden Island, and Kumboola Island are smaller, steep islands with fringing reef and no reliable anchorages. They function as navigational reference points only and are not suitable for overnighting.

Family Islands Sailing Guide – Approaches

The Family Islands are approached from the east via the Coral Sea or from the west via Mission Beach. Depths around the group are generally >20 m until within 0.3–0.5 NM of each island. The eastern sides of all islands are exposed to swell and unsuitable for anchoring.

Tidal flow through the channels between Dunk, Bedarra, Wheeler, and Coombe Islands runs 0.5–1.5 kt, strongest on spring tides. Wind‑against‑tide conditions create short, steep chop in the southern sector. Fringing reef dries to 0 m at LAT around all islands and requires conservative off‑reef margins when manoeuvring.

Family Islands Sailing Guide – Anchorage

Anchorages exist only on the western sides of Dunk Island, Bedarra Island, Wheeler Island, and Coombe Island. Depths range 6–15 m over sand with coral rubble. Holding varies; sand patches provide acceptable grip, while rubble reduces reliability. Swinging room is limited at all anchorages.

Exposure to northerly winds is a consistent limiting factor. In southeast trade winds, expect gust acceleration off island slopes and moderate swell wrap. Overnighting is practical only in stable conditions.

Family Islands Sailing Guide – Entry Formalities

The Family Islands have no clearance facilities. Vessels arriving from overseas must complete Australian Border Force, Immigration, and Biosecurity entry at designated ports such as Cairns or Townsville. No restrictions apply to Starlink or other satellite communications equipment. Firearms must be declared on entry into Australia and cannot be landed on any island.

Family Islands Sailing Guide – Marina Facilities

There are no marinas or berthing facilities anywhere in the Family Islands group. All visiting vessels must anchor. Nearest marina and berthing options are Mission Beach (Clump Point): public jetty only, no berths. Port Hinchinbrook Marina (Cardwell): depths 2–3 m at MLWS. Cairns Marlin Marina: full‑service deepwater marina >5 m.

Family Islands Sailing Guide – Local Weather

The region is dominated by southeast trade winds from May to September, typically 15–25 kt, producing consistent swell wrap on all western anchorages. Summer months bring lighter winds, afternoon sea breezes, and higher thunderstorm frequency. Cyclone season runs November to April with rapid deterioration possible.

Family Islands Sailing Guide – Provisioning

Supermarkets. No supermarkets exist on any island in the Family Islands group. Nearest provisioning is on the mainland at Mission Beach: Woolworths Mission Beach. FoodWorks Mission Beach. Local specialty produce includes tropical fruit from small farms in Mission Beach, El Arish, and the Cassowary Coast.

Family Islands Sailing Guide – Summary

The Family Islands provide functional, weather‑dependent anchorages for vessels transiting the Cassowary Coast. Approaches are straightforward, but fringing reef, limited swinging room, and exposure to wind shifts require conservative seamanship. All provisioning and technical needs must be handled on the mainland. The Family Islands Sailing Guide for all you need to know.
