Liveaboard Essentials What to Buy Before Moving Aboard- Buy before moving aboard only what is required to keep the yacht safe, habitable and legally operable from the first night. Defer equipment whose size, location, electrical demand or operating value depends on experience aboard. A yacht filled with untested domestic equipment before occupation often develops overloaded lockers, excessive electrical demand, duplicated tools and equipment that does not suit the installation.
The purchase sequence begins with the yacht’s existing condition. Inventory all safety equipment, tools, spares, bedding, galley items, electrical equipment and documentation already aboard. Test installed systems before buying replacements or upgrades. Do not assume an item is absent because it is not visible; emergency equipment and spares may be stored behind berths, beneath tanks or inside cockpit lockers.
Classify each proposed purchase by consequence. Equipment required to control flooding, fire, gas, electrical faults, sanitation, drinking water and access belongs in the pre-move category. Equipment intended to improve storage, comfort, communications or energy production can wait until the yacht’s actual use has established a requirement.
The first task after taking possession is to live aboard for at least 24 hours and operate every installed system under normal conditions. Run the freshwater pumps, heads, refrigeration, cooker, lighting, charging sources, inverter, shore power, navigation equipment, communications, engine, bilge pumps and ventilation while monitoring voltage, current, pressure, temperature, leaks, cycling and abnormal noise. This trial establishes what operates, what fails under load and what defects or legacy modifications were not identified during the purchase. Read every available equipment manual and examine the vessel records, maintenance history, receipts, wiring diagrams, plumbing drawings and previous survey findings before changing the installation. Record each fault and separate required repairs from convenience upgrades. Do not order equipment or begin alterations until onboard use has established the actual requirement, available capacity, installation constraints and effect on connected systems. Decisions based on evidence prevent unnecessary purchases, duplicated equipment and the uncontrolled conversion of a usable boat into a continuing project boat. The first 24 hours aboard will expose faults, operating limitations and missing equipment that cannot be identified from an inventory or sales inspection.
A new appliance, battery bank or storage system does not correct an unsafe installation. Resolve defects that can cause flooding, fire, electric shock, gas release, sewage leakage or loss of essential services before moving aboard.
The yacht requires working fire protection before cooking, charging batteries or using shore power. Confirm the type, rating, condition and service status of every extinguisher. Replace units that are discharged, damaged, corroded, outside their service requirements or unsuitable for the likely fire classes aboard.
Install smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms in locations appropriate to the accommodation and combustion equipment. Test each alarm using its installed test function. Carry replacement batteries where the alarm design uses them.
A fire blanket belongs within reach of the galley exit, not above the cooker where flames can prevent access. Keep an emergency light accessible from the berth and companionway.
Do not rely on one extinguisher positioned beside the engine or galley. A fire can block access to the equipment closest to it. Check the date on them for expiry!
Establish at least one independent drinking-water reserve in potable-water containers. Do this even when the yacht has working tanks and a pressure pump. A contaminated tank, failed pump or split hose can remove access to the main supply.
Do not buy a watermaker solely because the yacht will be occupied. Its capacity, electrical demand, installation location, intake arrangement and maintenance burden depend on cruising pattern and water availability. It can wait unless the initial movement immediately requires independent water production. It is a big expense that is in the nice to have category.
In most cases if your new boat is within a marina then this is not as important. The toilet must have a working inlet, discharge route and holding-tank arrangement before occupation. Carry the service kit appropriate to the installed toilet, including the joker valve where applicable.
Buy only toilet paper compatible with the system and maintain a dedicated sanitation tool kit. Gloves, absorbent material, disposable bags and disinfectant require separate storage from food and freshwater equipment.
Carry plugs or caps capable of isolating a failed toilet or sanitation branch. A split hose or failed pump must not leave the complete system open or prevent use of another toilet where fitted.
Do not purchase toilet additives until the tank material, treatment system and pump-out arrangements are known. An incompatible chemical can damage seals, interfere with treatment equipment or create hazardous reactions with products already in the tank.
Buy replacement fuses of every installed type and rating. Record which circuit uses each fuse. Do not substitute a larger fuse for one that repeatedly opens.
Carry a multimeter, insulated hand tools and a basic terminal-repair kit containing the correct tinned cable, heat-shrink terminals and adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing. The kit must match the conductor sizes used aboard.
Provide independent lighting that does not rely on the yacht’s main electrical distribution. Keep one light at the berth, one near the companionway and one available for machinery inspection. I use a rechargeable spotlight and another general light using the same battery as my power tools.
Obtain only the charging cables and adaptors required for equipment already selected for use. A collection of domestic power boards, extension leads and USB adaptors can overload sockets and create unsecured wiring throughout the accommodation.
Do not purchase a large inverter before measuring the yacht’s actual AC demand, battery capacity, cable route and charging capability. The inverter rating alone does not establish whether the DC installation can supply it safely.
Confirm that mooring lines and fenders match the berth and yacht. Replace lines with damaged fibres, hardened sections or inadequate length. The working arrangement must account for tide, surge and chafe.
Provide safe boarding from the dock and tender. A stable step, handhold or ladder may be required depending on freeboard and berth geometry. Boarding equipment must remain secured and usable in darkness or rain.
Carry a working boat hook and a means of recovering an item or line from the water. Store them where they can be reached from the deck.
Check hatch, washboard and companionway security before occupation. Buy replacement locks, catches or retaining hardware where the yacht cannot be secured or closed against rain.
Measure berths before buying bedding. Yacht berths commonly use tapered or irregular dimensions. Domestic fitted sheets and mattress toppers may not fit or may obstruct access beneath the berth.
Buy only the bedding required for immediate use. Keep one dry replacement set in a sealed or protected locker.
Provide ventilation beneath mattresses where condensation occurs against the berth base. The required solution depends on the berth construction, climate and airflow. Inspect the space after several occupied nights before purchasing a complete moisture-control system.
Do not fill under-berth spaces with clothing before confirming that they remain dry and that access to tanks, batteries, seacocks or pumps is not obstructed.
Buy the minimum equipment required to prepare, cook, eat and clean one normal meal cycle. Confirm the cooker fuel, burner operation, pot restraints and gas isolation before selecting cookware.
Use cookware that fits the burner spacing and can be retained by the installed pan supports. Oversized domestic pans can obstruct adjacent burners or move when the yacht rolls.
Carry one saucepan, one frying pan, one kettle or water-heating vessel, one knife, one cutting board and enough plates, cups and utensils for the occupants. Add equipment only after storage and cooking patterns are known.
Buy a fire-safe rubbish container or a secured lidded bin that fits its assigned space. Loose waste bags obstruct movement and can leak into lockers.
Do not purchase an electric kettle, coffee machine, microwave, induction plate, air fryer or other high-load appliance until the shore-power, inverter, battery and charging systems have been assessed under liveaboard use.
Obtain rubbish bags that fit the onboard bin, recycling bags, a brush, dustpan, bucket, cloths and cleaning products compatible with the yacht’s materials and sanitation system.
Store oily rags, batteries, chemicals and contaminated maintenance waste separately from domestic rubbish. Carry sealable containers for waste that cannot be disposed of at the current berth.
Avoid buying a large range of cleaning chemicals. Several products can damage acrylic windows, seals, tank coatings, toilet components or aluminium surfaces. Never mix bleach with acids, ammonia or toilet chemicals.
Carry tools required to isolate and service the yacht’s installed systems. These include screwdrivers, spanners, sockets, pliers, hose-clamp drivers, a utility knife, electrical crimpers and the dedicated tools required for filters or proprietary fittings.
The first spares inventory must cover failures that can stop propulsion, charging, dewatering, freshwater delivery or sanitation. Include pump fuses, hose clamps, plumbing end stops, pump seals, engine filters and drive belts where they match the installed equipment.
Do not buy assorted spare parts without identifying their application. A fitting, impeller or filter that does not match an installed component consumes locker space without providing repair capability.
Live aboard before purchasing a complete set of storage containers. Locker dimensions do not establish how the spaces perform when loaded. Some lockers remain damp, become hot, restrict ventilation or provide access to equipment beneath them.
Observe which items require daily access and which can occupy deep storage. Then purchase containers that can be removed without emptying adjacent lockers.
Rigid containers use their full external volume even when partly empty. Soft bags can fit irregular spaces but may obstruct ventilation and absorb moisture. Select each type for a known location rather than applying one storage system throughout the yacht.
Do not install permanent shelves, hooks or partitions until wiring, hoses, structural access and equipment-removal paths have been identified.
Delay non-essential appliances until electrical demand has been measured. Record shore-power limits, daily battery consumption, charger output and the available inverter capacity.
An appliance that operates at the marina may become unusable at anchor. Its storage volume remains aboard even when there is insufficient power to run it.
Purchase an appliance only after assigning a secure storage position, confirming its load, determining how it will be used underway and establishing whether heat or moisture from operation affects the accommodation.
Do not size renewable generation or battery capacity from general liveaboard consumption figures. Measure the yacht’s actual daily demand through refrigeration, lighting, electronics, pumps, communications and personal equipment.
Inspect available deck, arch and cabin-top space before buying solar panels. Account for shading, access, sail controls, ventilation and cable routing. A panel that obstructs a hatch or occupies working deck space creates another operational problem.
Battery expansion requires review of charging sources, battery chemistry, compartment ventilation, cabling, fusing, monitoring and weight distribution. Adding capacity without adequate charging extends recovery time and can leave the bank chronically undercharged.
Wind generation depends on berth conditions, anchoring pattern, noise transfer, mounting structure and cable route. It can wait until the yacht’s operating pattern confirms a need.

A watermaker becomes justified when cruising areas, tank capacity and water access establish a production requirement. Before purchase, determine output, electrical demand, seawater-intake arrangement, prefiltration, membrane access and preservation requirements.
A portable or installed washing machine requires water, drainage, electrical power, ventilation and storage. Marina laundry use during the first weeks provides actual information about load frequency and onboard water demand.
Do not place these systems aboard before confirming that the yacht can supply their water and electrical loads without compromising drinking water, battery reserve or storage access.
Use the existing tender arrangement before replacing it. Record the required passenger capacity, load, lifting method, storage location, beach conditions and distance from anchorage to shore.
A larger tender can exceed deck space, davit capacity or safe lifting weight. A heavier outboard can make beach handling and theft control more difficult.
Purchase changes only after verifying how the tender is launched, secured, fuelled and recovered in the yacht’s intended cruising conditions.
Delay cushions, extra bedding, tableware, pictures, lamps and decorative storage until moisture, movement and available space are understood.
Any object not secured can become a projectile during vessel movement. Wall-mounted items can conceal inspection panels or penetrate wiring and plumbing when installed.
Domestic furniture and soft furnishings can absorb moisture, block ventilation and restrict access to equipment. Occupation will establish which surfaces and spaces can accept them without interfering with the yacht.
Some purchases cannot be classified without the yacht’s first operating area. Offshore safety equipment, communications, navigation charts, ground tackle, spare fuel containers, water production and heavy-weather equipment depend on where the yacht will operate.
If the yacht will remain in a marina, the immediate requirement is safe occupation and connection to shore services. If it will depart immediately for coastal or offshore sailing, all safety, navigation, communication, medical and passage equipment required for that operation belongs in the pre-move category.
Local laws, registration conditions, marina rules and insurance requirements can also make equipment mandatory before occupation or departure. Confirm these requirements for the yacht and operating area.
Before buying an item, establish the following important five facts:
Buy immediately when delay exposes the yacht to flooding, fire, gas, electric shock, sanitation failure, loss of drinking water or loss of legal compliance. Delay the purchase when its capacity, location or usefulness depends on liveaboard experience.
Before moving aboard, buy the equipment required for fire control, flooding control, drinking water, sanitation, lighting, safe boarding, waste storage and basic system repair. Correct unsafe installations and obtain exact spares for critical equipment already fitted.
Wait before buying large appliances, extensive storage systems, battery upgrades, solar arrays, wind generators, watermakers, laundry equipment and replacement tender systems. Their correct selection depends on measured consumption, available space and the yacht’s operating pattern.
