Its scope may concentrate on seaworthiness, safety equipment and conditions relevant to underwriting. It is not less accurate by definition; it answers a different question and may contain less detail than the buyer requires for a purchase decision. Note: I bought my own boat and the owner had previously supplied a recent insurance survey. This was found to be totally erroneous and full of false statements. My own survey showed up much of these. As a broker told me they rely in good faith on the boat owners fully disclosing information, but reality is many lie to get rid of the boat.

Do not use an insurance survey as a substitute for a pre-purchase survey unless the surveyor confirms that the inspection, testing and report meet the required purchase scope. A lender or insurer may accept a pre-purchase report, but that does not mean an insurance report provides the same buyer protection.

Review engine make, model, serial number, operating hours, service records and parts support. Hour-meter readings are useful only when the meter history is known. Condition and maintenance evidence carry more weight than an unverified low reading.

Inspect cold-start behaviour, smoke, oil pressure, coolant temperature, charging output, vibration and leaks. Run the engine under load during sea trial and confirm that it reaches the expected operating range. A no-load run at the berth does not test cooling, fuel supply, propeller loading or mounts.

Identify system voltage (Usually 12V), battery banks, battery chemistry, isolation switches, main protection, distribution panels (open the panel and check the wiring condition), charging sources, inverter, shore-power installation and high-current loads. Do not assume that cable colour or labelling remains consistent after previous alterations. Ask for the set of electrical schematic drawings to look at (if they even exist).
