The final approach into Great Sandy Straits Marina is protected and carries 3.0 m+ at LAT, allowing access for most cruising yachts. Skippers monitor tide height when approaching from the western side of Hervey Bay, as the flats north‑west of the marina shallow rapidly outside the marked channel. Night entry is possible but avoided by most vessels due to the density of fishing traffic and the proximity of drying banks.
Urangan is not an anchorage harbour. The coastline outside the marina is shallow and exposed, and anchoring is not practical near the harbour entrance. Yachts requiring shelter must enter Great Sandy Straits Marina, which provides full protection from wind and swell. The wider Hervey Bay region offers limited anchoring options due to shallow banks, though the Great Sandy Strait provides multiple sheltered anchorages once inside the channel system.
Northern Great Sandy Strait Entry: From Urangan, vessels enter the northern Strait via the marked channel south of Round Island. Depths are generally 3.0–4.0 m, but the margins fall away quickly, and the channel meanders across the flats. The stream is moderate here, and timing is less critical than in the southern Strait, but wind‑against‑tide can produce short, steep chop.

Fuel, water and basic marine services are available on‑site, with chandlery, engineering and provisioning located within the surrounding commercial precinct. The marina is used as a reset point before entering the Strait or preparing for a Wide Bay Bar crossing, and its predictable depths make it the most reliable berthing option on the Fraser Coast.
Urangan is protected from ocean swell by Fraser Island, and the marina remains calm in most weather patterns. Strong south‑easterlies can create chop in Hervey Bay, but this does not penetrate the marina basin. Northerlies have limited effect inside the harbour. The marina provides reliable shelter throughout the cruising season.
Supermarkets: Urangan is serviced by Woolworths Urangan, located close to the marina precinct and used by most crews for full provisioning runs. It carries reliable stocks of dry goods, fresh produce, dairy, frozen stores and long‑life items suitable for extended movements through the Strait. Aldi Hervey Bay provides bulk dry goods and packaged staples at consistent pricing and is commonly used for secondary provisioning runs. Coles Hervey Bay in the central commercial district offers additional depth of stock and is used when crews require specific brands or larger quantities. All three are within short taxi distance of the marina, allowing efficient turnaround before entering the Strait.
Markets: Fresh produce is sourced primarily from the Hervey Bay Farmers Market, which offers seasonal fruit, vegetables and herbs suitable for extended storage aboard. The market provides hardy produce for longer passages and high‑turnover fresh items for short stays. Supplementary fresh goods are available from Urangan Central Fresh Produce, which carries refrigerated items and packaged greens. Independent grocers in the Urangan commercial strip provide additional options for topping up perishables immediately before departure.
