St. Anthony is selected when yachts intend to continue north toward Labrador or when weather patterns make the southern Newfoundland landfall less favourable. Routing from Greenland or the Labrador Sea is shaped by the position of North Atlantic lows, which often push swell and wind down the Labrador coast. Northerly or northeasterly winds can create steep seas along exposed sections, making St. Anthony a safer and more controlled first landfall than ports farther north.

Fog is common where the Labrador Current meets warmer air, and visibility can collapse quickly. When fog density is high on the mid‑Labrador route, St. Anthony provides a more predictable approach than Cartwright or Hopedale. Westerly winds generally favour a direct approach from offshore, while easterly systems can increase swell on the outer headlands but do not normally prevent entry.

Supermarkets. St. Anthony has two supermarkets suitable for practical yacht provisioning. Foodland (West Street) fresh produce, meat, dairy, bakery, frozen goods, dry stores, household supplies. Value Foods (Goose Cove Road) fresh produce, meat, dairy, bakery, frozen goods, dry stores.

Markets. St. Anthony has no permanent produce markets. Seasonal stalls appear intermittently but are not reliable for yacht provisioning.

Fish Markets. Local seafood is obtained through small retail outlets and fish plants depending on season and quota. Cod, crab and mussels are available when in season. No public fish market operates.

Local cuisine reflects northern Newfoundland and Labrador food traditions.  Salt Cod is preserved cod rehydrated and cooked with potatoes and onions. Fish and Brewis is salt cod combined with softened hardtack and served with fried pork fat. Boiled Dinner is salt beef with cabbage, potatoes, carrots and turnip. Snow Crab and Mussels is locally caught shellfish, steamed or boiled with minimal seasoning. Cod Tongues are small gelatinous pieces from the cod throat, dredged and pan‑fried.
