Antigua Yacht Cruising Guide

Antigua Yacht Cruising Guide.  Antigua is a large Leeward Island with deepwater approaches, extensive reef systems, and multiple secure anchorages on the leeward and southern coasts. Navigation is straightforward in settled trade‑wind conditions, with deep water close to shore and predictable sea states. The island supports comprehensive marine infrastructure centred on English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour, and Jolly Harbour, making it one of the most functional yacht bases in the northern Caribbean.

The sailing environment is shaped by the northeast trades, typically 12–20 kn, with moderate seas offshore and calmer conditions on the leeward side. The island’s reef‑protected bays provide reliable shelter, while the south coast offers deep, open anchorages with good holding. Inter‑island movements to Barbuda, St Kitts, and Guadeloupe are direct, with clear sightlines and minimal hazards.

Antigua Yacht Cruising Guide - Approaches

Approaches to Antigua are deep and clear, with depths above 50–100 m until close to the island shelf. The leeward and southern coasts shoal gradually to 20–30 m before rising into the main harbours. English Harbour has a wide, unobstructed approach with depths reducing to 10–15 m outside and 5–8 m inside. Falmouth Harbour has a broad entrance with depths of 10–20 m, shoaling to 5–10 m over sand and mud.

Jolly Harbour on the west coast has a dredged entrance channel carrying approximately 3–4 m, with inner basin depths around 3 m. The north and east coasts are protected by extensive reefs and shoals, with depths reducing rapidly from 20 m to 2–5 m; these areas require disciplined daylight navigation and are not used for routine approaches.

Tidal range is small at 0.3–0.6 m, and currents are weak, with only minor set along the south coast during fresh trades. Sea states offshore are moderate under normal trades, with occasional long‑period swell affecting exposed anchorages.

Antigua Yacht Cruising Guide - Anchorage

English Harbour provides 5–10 m over sand and mud with good shelter and controlled anchoring zones. Falmouth Harbour offers 5–12 m over sand and mud with reliable holding and ample space. Jolly Harbour provides 3–6 m over sand with good shelter inside the outer bay.

Deep Bay on the west coast has 5–10 m over sand with moderate shelter but can experience swell during northerly systems. Carlisle Bay on the south coast offers 10–15 m over sand with good holding and reliable protection from the prevailing trades. The north and east coasts have limited anchoring due to reefs and exposure.

Dinghy access is straightforward in all main harbours, with established docks and predictable landing points.

Antigua Yacht Cruising Guide - Entry Formalities

Antigua and Barbuda operate a unified clearance system with ports of entry at English Harbour, Jolly Harbour, and St John’s. Clearance requires vessel registration, passports, crew list, and last port clearance. Yachts must complete arrival and departure formalities through the national e‑system or in person. Firearms must be declared and secured under local authority. Communications equipment such as Starlink must comply with national telecommunications regulations. Quarantine rules apply to fresh produce and waste disposal.

Antigua Yacht Cruising Guide - Marina Facilities

Nelson’s Dockyard Marina (English Harbour) provides berths with depths of 3–5 m, fuel, water, power, mechanical and electrical workshops, rigging services, sail repair, and chandlery supply. The harbour is sheltered and suitable for all normal conditions.

Falmouth Harbour Marina, Antigua Yacht Club Marina, and Catamaran Marina offer berths with depths of 3–5 m, fuel, water, power, haul‑out capability, mechanical support, and comprehensive chandlery supply. These facilities support a wide range of yacht sizes and are the primary service hubs on the island.

Jolly Harbour Marina provides berths with depths around 3–4 m, fuel, water, power, haul‑out capability, mechanical and electrical services, and chandlery supply. The entrance channel carries 3–4 m and is suitable for most cruising yachts.

St John’s is a commercial port and not suitable for yacht berthing.

Antigua Yacht Cruising Guide - Local Weather

Weather is dominated by the northeast trades, typically 12–20 kn, producing moderate seas offshore and calmer conditions on the leeward and southern coasts. Swell from the north can affect west‑facing anchorages during winter months, creating roll and surf at dinghy landing points. Rainfall is seasonal, with higher frequency of showers during the wet season. Hurricane season from June to November requires conservative planning, as Antigua does not provide cyclone‑grade shelter for yachts.
