Watermaker Seawater Supply

We plan on installing a water maker on our 37 foot sailboat. What is your opinion concerning sharing the engine raw water intake to also feed the water maker? We have read conflicting stories about whether this is a good idea? We probably would be running the engine while making water and are concerned that the engine could be starved of cooling water. As always thanks for your help.

Most manufacturers do not recommend sharing the raw water intake and this is for very good reason. The raw water supply to the engine cooling may be substantially reduced and cause engine overheating. This is more noticeable in warmer tropical water temperatures. It is often done to save on a second seawater inlet fitting and a separate strainer. While some do put a larger seawater inlet along with strainer and valve it is easier to simply put in an additional one.
